A Key to Chapter 15

Stowe provides further details about her story based on actual events in A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Chapter 15:

The character of St. Clare represents a certain class of slaveholder in the South. Stowe includes a letter from Patrick Henry in A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin, which reflects a similar view of slavery as that of St. Clare. Henry believes that slavery will come to an end some day. If his generation could not reduce slavery he states, “…let us treat the unhappy victims with lenity.” (pg. 62) Stowe created the character of St. Clare “with enthusiasm and with hope.”

The full story of this connection can be read in Chapter IX, “St. Clare”  of A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
