News in Connecticut, Stowe’s birthplace:

  • The days were very hot, with temperatures reaching 94 degrees in the shade. The heat continued through the night. Rain showers did not help cool down the temperatures.

National News:

  • Political tensions remained high in the South, with election campaigns between Unionists and Secessionists
  • Ground was broken for the Pacific Railroad to run through Missouri
  • A star was added to the flag of the United States this week for the state of California. This brought the star count to 31.
