Stowe’s critics accused her of inaccuracies and creating false images of the South. Her response to this criticism was to publish A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin: Presenting the Original Facts and Documents, Together with Corroborative Statements Verifying the Truth of the Work – 1853.

In this book, Stowe provided the real-life stories she used to create her novel.
