Stowe provides further details about her story based on actual events in A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
Chapter 7:
Some disputed the possibility of a woman crossing an icy river, as Eliza is said to have done in this chapter. Stowe’s story was confirmed by a man who stated that he knew the man who took part in the real-life crossing. The Ohio clergyman said, “Now, I know all about that, for I got the story from the very man that helped her up the bank. I know it is true, for now she is living in Canada.”
The full story of this connection can be read in Part 1, Chapter V “Eliza” of A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
